On my drives from Florence to North Adams, I travel Route 9, go
north on Rt. 8A, then west on Rt. 116. Just after Mt. Greylock pops into the picture, I turn right on a dirt
road I call the "cow path." It passes the Gulf Farm. The
view from there is spectacular. To the west is Greylock, and to the right, on clear days, you can see North Adams, nestled
in the valley like Brigadoon. One afternoon, I stopped to take photos of some weird clouds. I concentrated
intensely, looking through my viewfinder as I snapped photo after photo. When I turned and headed
to the car, I was astonished to see about 25 cows, all standing at the fence by the road. They had somehow sneaked up
quietly. They were just staring at me, probably wondering what the heck I was doing.
