The Northampton State Hospital in Northampton, Massachusetts, was considered
almost a utopian solution to mental health treatment in the middle of the 19th century. In the 1980s, with the quality of
care declining rapidly, and the movement to mainstream mentally ill persons into the community, the hospital was gradually
phased out. A huge multi-use development is being located on the vast campus, but most of the buildings, including historic
and beautiful Old Main, have recently been demolished, despite many sincere efforts by preservationists to encourage
creative re-use.
